The hotel is located in the center of Vienna 200 m from St. Stephans Square, and 50 m from The Graben, Vienna’s main pedestrian street. You will find this central location makes the main sights and shops easily reached on foot. For example, the Hofburg Palace is only four blocks away, reached in five minutes, and the great art museum, Kunsthistorisches Museum, is another block further.
This entire downtown of Vienna all around the hotel is filled with restaurants, bars and cafes and shops that will make it very easy for you to enjoy excellent meals and drinks in a variety of prices. The pedestrian lanes throughout this central zone will enthrall you with their historic character and traditional architecture. There is no need to ride the metro or bus to reach most of Vienna’s sights of interest when you stay at the Wandl.
Hotel Wandl is surely part of Viennese tradition. Situated in the heart of Vienna, the hotel dates back to 1700, when Court Chamber Counsellor and Laxenburg Palace Govenor, Jakob Metz, built this house, which was then called "To the Four Seasons".
Joseph Georg Daum bought the house in 1851 and converted it to a hotel. He installed all items of comfort according to Parisian models. In 1854, Johann Wandl whose name it carries to this day, bought the hotel. Later he had an elevator installed, as well as bathrooms - this made the hotel the most elegant of those times. An uncountable number of guests have since then enjoyed the harmony of traditional Viennese hospitality and modern comfort.
The guest is confronted with the history of this house - still owned by the same family - with its flair, its warmth and conviction which Hotel Wandl endearment to keep against all fashions and short-lived currents. The Wandl is a traditional family-run hotel.
Some Tripadvisor comments:
“The location is perfect, just steps from the Graben but in a quiet street. The hotel has been managed by the same family for many generations. It is charming, a beautiful spiral staircase leads to the upper floors (of course there are elevators). The staff is welcoming, well informed and professional. The rooms were larger than expected for a hotel in the heart of the city. The rooms were very nice, spotlessly clean. A generous buffet breakfast is served in a lovely dining room….We treasure the memory of staying there and hope to return.”
“We spent 4 nights here without a hitch. Nice little bar in the lobby, good breakfast, nice comfortable clean rooms, great location in the Center of old town Vienna. Good live music in several places nearby, classical mostly, every night.”
“The pic on the website didn't prepare us for such comfort: a jr suite. And the breakfast buffet was substantial and fresh and delicious in a modern environment. We will only stay with Wandl family in Vienna in the future. The hotel is hidden but actually is just off the main pedestrian malls near St. Stephen's church. A family hotel for 4 hundred years. Get a room where the windows open to fresh air. There is no car traffic to speak of so your windows can remain open.”
“A nice boutique style hotel with beautifully decorated interiors. The hotel has a great location. It is about 2 minutes’ walk from St Stephen's Catherdral . Room was clean and very spacious with old Baroque style furniture and very old beautiful original paintings ( we booked the best room). We booked a big room with extra little unfolding bed for our granddaughter.”
“This is facing the back of St. Peter's Church with 5 floor. You can walk to many tourist attractions like Stephan's Church, Opera house and Naschmarkt etc. Hotel is clean and well organized with decent breakfast option. Reception is ready to serve you at any time with gentle smiles and they were kind enough to tell you which restaurant is recommended and which are not!”
“This hotel is only two blocks from St. Stephen's Square and is a real gem. Recently renovated and redecorated, the rooms are sleek and modern with great bathrooms and showers. I stayed in a single room and although it was small, it had a comfortable single bed, a desk, a wardrobe with plenty of storage space and a wonderful bathroom and shower. The room looked out on the street and the back of St. Peter's Church. I was only on the second floor, but did not find the street noisy at all. The room was spotlessly clean and remained that way throughout my week long stay. The free wifi and the free computer were a great boon. No one ever seemed to use the computer except me, so that was quite nice! The location is great because you can walk to everything within the Ringstrasse and are only 2 blocks from the U-bahn (subway) for longer journeys. In addition, there are quite a few decent cafes and restaurants within just a couple of blocks, something I appreciated in the pouring rain of this Vienna spring. The breakfast hours are long, the coffee good and the plentiful buffet is varied and delicious. This included scrambled eggs and sausages, as well as the normal breads, muesli, fruits, yogurts and cheeses one expects in a European hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They all spoke great English and were able to assist us with taxis, directions, restaurant recommendations, etc. I will stay here again and highly recommend it!”
